The great thing was that this film sparked an interest in the book series which we read aloud (and selectively edit out too violent bits).Congratulations Slytherin on winning the Yearly House Cup 2021 Have a question about the series? Check out our commonly asked questions here before you post! Potter's parents death is a very short recap scene, but could upset very sensitive children, my son was ok. I wouldn't push this on a very sensitive child, but it was perfect for my logical almost 6-year old who is very clear on difference between reality and fantasy world/magic so he was not that scared or affected. Ages 7-8+ can probably watch solo, but if you watch with a 5-6 year old, stay on hand and know your child. I think a lot of the HP movies need parents to watch with their child so that you can provide context/description. We watched it together and I was careful to gauge his reactions and pause/skip the scenes that were troubling (such as the Voldemort reveal scene with Quirrel that was too creepy for my child - if you simply fast forward a few images, the rest was ok for him).

This was a fabulous family movie and introduction for my almost 6-year old to the world of Harry Potter. Parents.watch it first and decide for yourself!!! Again, I am the rare parent who knows what my children are able to deal with and understand. I particularly like the fact that my 6 year old can see how strong and smart a girl Hermoine is compared to all the other characters. My kids have embraced that and are able to enjoy movies like this without negative repercussions. I have made HUGE deal about all of it being pretend, just a story. But he is obsessed with this movie! He and our daughter love the fantasy and magic of it all. Those parts and a few others our 4 year old still wants to have clarified when he watches. Yes, there are parts that parents should definitely talk to their kids about (death of Harry's parents, unicorn death, Voldemort's possession of Quirrel, Quirrel's death). Socerer's Stone is one of the two I don't mind them watching. The movies after these too are just WAY too intense for my kids and won't allow them to watch them until they are MUCH older. I am one of the rare parents who allow my 4 and 6 year old kids to watch this and the first Harry Potter movies. I wouldn't call any of the scenes in this movie frightening, the most frightening scene is a scene near the end, which doesn't last long, doesn't hold much violence and is quite tame. He then ends up going to Hogwarts and his life begins, he makes friends, goes on adventures, attends class, he's learning and discovering things not only about himself and his family, but about his friends, his courses, the people around him in general.
It's a good story, it's lovely, and it starts with a boy named Harry who lived under a cupboard, forgotten and shunned for being odd. This is the film that really kicked the franchise off and made it go mad in a good way, kids around the world and adults love it, and there's a reason. I think these are some of the best childrens' books and movies around because they teach good lessons, they have good role models and they teach people truths, not everyone who seems good is and not everyone who seems evil is either. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a lovely movie, it's filled with excitement and magical creativity.
